DISASTER of Lakanal House were not heeded 

The Lakanal House fire in 2009 that killed six people in a south London tower block. The fire, caused by an electrical fault in a television inside a ninth-floor flat, spread through the 1958-built block with a suddenness and ferocity that terrified residents and baffled firefighters. The Grenfell Tower disaster happened just four years after the Lakanal House disaster, this is why the Grenfell Tower fire is a scandal. The authorities were warned this would happen again; Grenfell is the evidence that they failed to act effectively and in a timely manner. Fundamental lessons from the Lakanal fire were ignored – and the government and its advisers must accept the blame. A separate investigation was opened by the London Fire Brigade which revealed that Lakanal House had been previously identified as at risk of fire spread should a fire occur. The building’s owners, Southwark Council, had scheduled the building for demolition in 1999 but had then decided against this and instead spent £3.5 million on refurbishment works.

The Inquiry

The inquest into the fatal fire at Lakanal House says a failure to involve building control and adhere to fire guidelines during refurbishment work was a contributory factor. In 2013, a coroner looking into deaths after a fatal fire at Lakanal House called for fire safety reforms, but they didn’t happen. That could have not only saved lives but also contributed more than £1bn to the public purse.

The block breached the Building Regulations: tower block flats should be able to contain a fire for one hour so that the fire fighters can get to the blaze and put it out before it spreads.

Lessons Not Learned

The Lakanal House Fire served as a tragic reminder of the importance of fire safety and the need for rigorous building regulations to protect the lives of residents in high-rise buildings. It prompted significant changes in fire safety practices and regulations in the UK, with the aim of preventing similar tragedies in the future, however these were not enough and many fire fighters and professionals were against any form of combustible material wrapped around a building. Lessons were not learned as just 8 years after Grenfell Tower tragedy happened.
